Here's some links to reviews to the Phenom II x4. While this is not a Core i7 killer, it is some good news for AMD. I for one would hate to see an end to AMD if for no other reason that we need some good competition in the market. I just may go with one later this spring.

Since I'm not cutting edge but may want to upgrade my 3800+ Athlon single core, anyone know of a reference of what other processors might fit my Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe mobo and be a worthwhile upgrade (meaning, cheap with bang for buck)? I shopped Tiger and didn't have the mother board listed. I'll try Asus but would welcome advice and insight beyond just a "these will install" list.

I have that board, but I'm not sure we share the same version. I'm using an Athlon 64 x2 6000+, the 125 watt version. I saw that they have came out with a 89 watt version now. The price is reasonable at 76$ from newegg.
I would think that would give a noticeable improvement, but you may want to check the CPU compatibility list from Asus to be sure your BIOS version is up to the CPU requirements.
Thanks, Pat. Found the Asus list with the BIOS reference. I was thinking a dual core but they're labled as triple and quad after the single core list (?) so will shop through. Only thing I can think to do that might give me an upgrade, over the original configuration, and not cost much or do harm.

I went from an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2.0GHz Windsor) to Athlon X2 5400+ (2.8GHz Brisbane) and noticed a performance increase, especially in certain games. I think that since you're currently running a single core, then you should notice a huge increase.
The 5400+ is fairly low power at 65W (there are also 45W low energy models too such as the 4850e), whereas the Phenom is pretty high power.
The 5400+ Brisbane that Chandler suggested looks like an excellent upgrade for your setup. Newegg has it available in two versions:

The Black Edition looks like the best bet, since it comes in a black box instead of a black/teal box. Also, the Black Edition doesn't include a pesky heatsink/fan. Otherwise, they are identical. I see many choices there before the newer 3 core and quad core chips.

Thanks Chandler Skeezix and Pat. Sounds like a plan. That is the list, Pat; I don't recognize these by "name" and it only gives a link to BIOS (not to the CPU itself, for specs) so that's what I meant by a list of some then triple then quad. I guess some of the long list are duo, but I don't know them to know that (without going elsewhere to figure it out). So glad to have a specific model mentioned, to check out... Also don't want to deal with any extra plug in weirdness, as far as an install that differs much from just slapping one in.
