Ok, so its 3 years old... and its about time for me to invest in something better:

P4 1.7 Ghz (Overheats  and freezes up at a rate of 1 time / minute .. I've tried many different cooling solutions)

GeForce 4 Ti 4400 (more expensive than my processor)

640 Mb PC 133 SDRAM

Dual 80 Gb 7200 RPM HDD's (WD) -- 2MB

Some crappy integrated sound/LAN

A motherboard that I dont even know the name of (Chipset = Intel 845G)

Some generic 400W PS

Its quite sad that the average computer I make is much better than my own
:(

I really want to make something with HT (I find it intriguing)
I think I'm just going to use all the same PC components that I currently have and just add a new case/power supply/motherboard/processor/memory
I'm looking at p4 2.6Ghz ish (800 w/ HT), 1 Gb Dual Channel (DDR400) memory, still undecided on the motherboard -- would like to do some OCing.
Any suggestions?

The intel 2.4 Ghz P4 chip is famous for overclocking. The ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe is regarded as the best motherboard for the P4 in my opinion.

In case he doesn't know, that would be the 800 Mhz front bus version.

The 2500+ of the Intel world. Wouldn't know, as I'm not a big overclocker, or Intel person.  :)

Definatly the 2.4 over the 2.6,  The 2.6's are very bad when it comes to overclocking.  Check my sig and see what a 2.4b can do.  The Asus board is very good but the MSI is equally good, same features and cheaoer.  My board is at $99 now. HT ready, 800 fsb, built in audio that is very good and a Great MSI forum for MSI owners only.

2 Gigs of HD space?? why so little.
Yeah, it will support a RADEON 7200 as most new distros of linux will.  If you're going gentoo be prepared for a more difficult install, but much much better gaming system.  You can d/l a build specifically for your processor; in return, everything is automatically tweaked.  If it is your first time compiling and doing everything manually I would suggest using the 2 CD set (read more on www.gentoo.org ).  They have great documentation and the community is great!  Would highly recommend.
