wonderings

At my work, we have a PC running Win XP Pro. I have Norton Antivirus 2004 installed. I first installed it on another PC also running XP Pro, and then installed it on this PC. I am guessing for live update you have to purchase a second copy of Norton Antivirus. I was thinking about just installing the Free version of AVG. Is it ok to leave Norton antivirus installed and still install AVG? or will this cause me alot of problems? I am a mac guy so viruses and things of this sort are a new world to me, so any help would be appreciated.

thanks

No, you should not run two antivirus programs on a single PC - uninstall Norton completely before you install the new program.

I beg to differ. I have AVG AV and Norton on my Windows 98 PC and they seem to play together just fine. ALthough I dislike norton's popups about expired subscriptions. What I can get for free I get for free...

I also have both progs on my new (sig) system. I have unchecked acgcc32 (AVG) from MSConfig so it doesn't start, but is there if I need it.

Eh, I have also had two AV programs installed (Norton and McAffee) way back when I ran Windows 98, but only one at a time were ever actively scanning.

As a rule, you do not want more than one AV program active. Since the more recent versions of these programs necessarily actively defend the system, it is a good idea to disable or uninstall all but one of them.

I too had norton 2001 and AVG running on my windows 98 system ... they ran ok. But it is much better to run one at a time, I tried  them both, preferred AVG, and thats what I run now :)
