Is an am2 4600+ worth the extra over a 4200+?

It depends on what you mean by "worth".

If you need the extra processing capability that results from the 2.4 GHz 4600+ over the 2.2 GHz 4200+, then it is worth the additional cost.

If you are looking for the best performance/price quotient, then it is probably not worth the cost - although, you didn't mention the costs involved. Current Newegg pricing is $179 and $243, so there is roughly 9% performance improvement for 36% price increase.
