Hey Bear, interesting news. I hope they release them soon. I want to build another system and I want it to be a screamer. All out no holds barred and I want AMD inside. Thanks for poasting the information.

Has the release date for Palomino been announced yet? I've seen September and October, seems like it's been delayed several times. Supposedly there is less heat generation in Palominos than T-birds.

By the way, I think this model rating scheme that AMD recently proposed is rather silly. From a consumer point of view, what is needed is a set of (perhaps 4 or 5) independant standard performance benchmarks that indicate how fast each processor handles business apps, graphics, mutimedia, multitasking, etc. AMD can put that on its advertising and packaging. Then, the consumer can compare any given processor to the benchmarks he is interested in.

The consumer wants performance. If GHz does not measure performance accurately, change the measurement method.

Anyway, I plan to build my first system later this year, just trying to decide whether to wait for Palomino.

The problem with benchmarks is that other factors come into play other than processor speed. But I agree that we need some kind of rating systems that compares apples to apples. I don't understand AMD's thinking either -- what's the point of rating a chip at 2 GHz if it performs relative to an Intel chip rated at 3.5GHz?

I'm in the same boat as far as whether or not to wait for the Palomino. AMD says mid-October, last I heard.

I can't believe the Palomino debut will knock down the T-Bird's price any more than it already is.
