Title: Defrag
Post by: Bill on April 18, 2009, 07:08 hrs
Maybe I'm being picky but....

For the last several years I've been using Disk Keeper Lite which seemed to work well when my main HDD was an 80 GB WD.  Since I switched to a 150GB V. Raptor, Disk Keeper Lite seems to leave System fragments all over the drive, at least as depicted by the program's graphic display.

The number of fragments with the larger drive is substantially higher as well.  The last time I mentioned this, someone suggested the increase is a result of the speed at which the Raptor writes.  And that's fine.  But Disk Keeper appears to leave them there.  Disk Keeper is a substantially better option than the Windows Defrag, and it's free.

Anyone have similar experience and/or a recommedation for something better?

Two freeware applications come to mind here.
Defraggler (http://www.defraggler.com/)
and
Smart Defrag (http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html)

Of the two I find that Smart Defrag does a somewhat better job and is a little faster. Defraggler is the newer product and is being updated regularly and allows for the defragmentation of individual files. I'm currently using both on different systems.

Thanks, Pat.  I will try one.

I have tried Smart Defrag.  This app. provides a great deal more information than Disk Keeper Lite and there seems to be a broader range of options and settings.  Part of what DK L was showing as 'fragmented' files according to S D are immovables.

There is an option for Optimization which is a feature the default Windows program used to do that DK L seems to ignore, or at least is silent about.

My favorite defrag freebie is JkDefrag (http://www.kessels.com/Jkdefrag/).

It's simple and does an excellent job. There's no setup or install - you just run the executable file.
