I was wondering if anyone knew of a good checkbook register software. I don't want anything fancy and I don't really want to connect to the bank, I just want to keep my register on my computer. I have seen some online but am a little afraid to try any of them.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I use Quicken by Intuit. I don't use it online, although I could. I prefer to keep my checkbook as a manual writing exercise. Some people use Microsoft Money, but I much prefer Quicken. I would suggest Quicken Basic 2009 or Quicken Deluxe 2009. I am using Quicken 2005 and it still works just fine for us.

If you want something 'tried and true" that works well, then you are pretty much limited to the two choices Mark mentioned.
I recently purchased Quicken 2007 Deluxe at an excellent price ($20), but it is no longer available. Although it has too many bells and whistles, it provides an excellent check register. It is sometimes a little nagging until you train it, but it's not that big of a deal.
You may want to consider Quicken 2009 Starter Edition (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832109097). It is their cheapest option and it will likely do everything that you need.

I have used several different versions of Quicken for a long time and it is an outstanding program.
If you really want some extra convenience, invest in computer printable checks from Quicken. Paying bills with Quicken is a fast and easy process. It also allows you to enter manual checks very easily.

I did have the Quicken starter in my hand at the store the other day but ended up not buying it as it didn't really show a checkbook register. And the one thing that really stopped me was I was concerned that after I bought it, it would force me to put in account numbers etc. to use it. So I though I would come searching for advice before I purchased it. I just want to keep track of older things. Because of some circumstances in my life there could be a need for me to go back and search out some things and I thought it would be so much better and easier to just have it all on the computer.
So, thanks for the advice and next time I'm at the store I will pick it up, sounds like what I am hunting for.

You will have to register the product, but nothing says that you have to provide Intuit with any actual information. When setting up a register in Quicken, you will also be asked for the bank name, account number, etc., but that is strictly for your use. You can make up whatever you want, if that's your comfort level. I have several accounts that I monitor and use actual information.
I have used various versions of Quicken since around 1996, and I find it to be a very valuable tool. I have always used good passwords, so security has never been an issue. I am also diligent to shut the program down when I am finished.
Rest assured that Quicken is a legitimate program, that when properly used (like anything else) will give you excellent results.
Quicken is great. I don't add the account numbers personally, but I do have all of my accounts in it. You can keep track of loans such as automobilies or mortgages easily and can keep track of credit card expenses easily.
