My brother bought his laptop almost two years ago, but I never really knew until today when he claimed that he used typical desktop components on his laptop instead of laptop oriented parts.

I didn't believe him.

Is it possible? The thing weighs more than 10 pounds.

Could be, as far as the processor is concerned.  Almost all the notebook vendors produce or produced P4 systems with desktop CPUs in them.

A lot of them are having overheating problems -- just ask anyone unlucky enough to own a Toshiba Satellite witha  desktop P4, or a Dell Inspiron 1100 or 5100 (and to a lesser extent, even the Inspiron 1150/5150/8500/8600, which use mobile processors but still have severe overheating problems).
