My sons computer keeps getting a blue screen with the error message saying its dumping and it has to be rebooted. It started doing it about a month ago and would only do it once every few days and now its doing it about 8 times a day. Its a gateway and is windows XP. any clue to what could be going on with it? Thank you

there will be as string of numbers across the bottom. to be bel to read them you ned to right click my computer>properties>advanced>the bottom 'settings' box (under startup and recovery) and untick the check box that says automatically restart. this will give yo enough time to write down the string that will twll you whats wrong. the part your intrested in is the bit beginning with *(i think) x000000**

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you but I was gone all day. I just asked him and he said no he doesn't have it installed, where can he get it and what does he do with it? Thank you so much for all your time and help.

You can get it here: Windows XP SP2

Don't worry about the "IT Professionals and Developers" blurb. Just download the file (it's very large) to the hard drive, then run it. After Windows is updated to SP2, the downloaded file can safely be deleted, or saved to a CD-ROM for future use on any other Windows XP computer that hasn't been updated.

The link I posted is the correct one to use if you want to have the file locally, and if you want to create your own SP2 update on a CD. It's the same one that Microsoft sends if you request the CD.

The one you posted also updates your computer to SP2, but does so online through Windows Update. If you look at the bottom right of the page you linked to, you'll find a link to download the file if you want to install it to multiple computers. Guess where the link takes you?

As many computers as I update to SP2, I find that having the file locally is much easier and I've never once had a problem with it. I also don't risk the possibility of something going wrong if the connection to the Internet goes down. I'll be updating another computer to SP2 tomorrow night, and I'll be using the same update file from the link I provided.
