When I first started using Norton's defrag utility, I noticed that it's quicker than the MS scandisk util that comes with Windows.  So, the particular defrag util can make a difference.

It should not keep starting over (and not finish). Are you sure all other programs are closed while you try this? Sounds like you did the ctr-alt-del thing, and closed everything.

20 min for a 6GB drive is pretty good. I have like 4GB of data, and it takes about 50 min. However, it depends also on just how fragged the drive is. Since my drive is partitioned, I actually only defrag the partitions that get a lot of read/write action, and don't worry about the rest. Divide and conquer. If it were 40GB, I'd just let it go overnight.

P.S. This week's Langa List has some tips on defragging. Check out the suggestions there and at this link:

Whenever I do a defrag,,I shutdown all background programs,, I even have to close systray, [ explorer, only thing left ] or it will not complete a defrag,, just keeps starting over. Is this normal ?  Plus, I only have a 6gig hard drive,, it takes about 20 minutes plus to defrag it,, how do these floks with 40 gig drives ever get it done ?
