Before you got this error, did you install some sfw?

Do you already have another browser installed on your sys?  If so, you can right-click on your IE icon.  Then go to Properties.  In the Internet Properties box that pops up, click on the Programs tab.  Toward the bottom there is a little box with Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.  *If* you have another browser loaded on your sys, take the check mark out of that box.  Then click on Apply, then OK.

One of the other folks here will be around to help you resolve the difficulty with IE.

Yes I did install some software, from Shagmail.  Once this problem started I uninstalled it, but I am told some advertising was left behind.

Thanks so much for the help on the default browser.

Hi, and welcome to our chat. (Don't worry, we're fairly nice here )

If you have IE5.x, this should be an easy fix. Rebuild IE as follows:

1. Double click on "My Computer", then "Control Panel", then select "Add/Remove Programs"

2. Select "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x and Internet Tools" in the list, then click on the "Add/Remove" button

3. Select "Repair Internet Explorer", then click on OK.

That's it. Nobody knows why Microsoft hid the command in the "Add/Remove Programs", but it works.

Hi Scuzzy,

Thanx for being able to provide a real solution to the problem.

Tobycat,

To get rid of the spyware, try Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de). It will remove all of the spyware from your system.  HOWEVER, be forewarned, some programs (such as download mgrs) will not run without their spyware intact.

BEFORE you remove the spyware from your sys, make sure you can reinstall any program which may balk at your attempt to keep it from phoning home.

If you have to leave spyware on your sys, you can still give yourself some protection from it by installing a good firewall.  Zone Alarm/ Zone Alarm Pro will alert you anytime something is trying to access your internet connection.  It is also highly configurable and you can prevent the spyware from reporting on you.

Another spyware-removal program from Gibson Research (SpinRite) - is OptOut, which is freely downloadable:

Hi...new here and not too pc literate so be gentle.  As best as I can tell from the IE help pages I need to contact Quantex with this error, and since they are no more, here I am.  When I try to use IE to surf I get an illegal operation message, and this is the reason:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in

Tell me what info you need to help me and I will provide it.

Also, can someone please tell me how to change my default browser since I can't use explorer?

thanks so much, this is very frustrating.
