How can a CDRW write faster than it can read? Something sounds fishey here.

Someone goofed, or swapped the numbers (i.e., it's a 48X read, 16X rewrite, 40X writer).

wait a minute im getting confussed here.  My rewriter is
12X 8X 32X, isn't it write, rewrite and read.  Or am I putting it in the wrong order b/c my writer can't write past 12X

That's right - but I've seen others quote them in different order.  The slowest speed is inevitably rewrite, next comes write and fastest is read.

Well, there are those $65 52x24x52x writers out now. (I saw the price on an LG one from wal-mart for $62 something I think)

I think in the burner world, as in most of the computer hardware categories, you get what you pay for.  If you get a no-name brand (not LG in particular, just generally speaking) from a store like Walmart, it's probably got a 50/50 chance of having some sort of problem in its lifetime.

It should have a warranty...but I was just browsing. If you have a 24x burner, will it accept 32x media--or does it have to be multispeed--same thing with burners--if it doesn't specifically say that it can burn 4x discs, It can't? Just wondering.

Most writers can back-throttle to a slower speed, but with many of the newer ones, you have a limited set of possibilities - i.e., not all speeds below the rated one are supported.

Many new drives can't write at 2 or 4X - they will slow down, but only to 8X or above.

Check the specs on the drive - they will tell you what speeds are supported.  Or, check www.cdrlabs.com, which often does thorough reviews on writers and will also tell you what is supported and what is not.

I think the LG one could go all the way down to 4x, but I haven't looked at it in a while. After a little bit, see my next CD topic.

According to the review on CDRLabs.com, this LG writer (GCC-8250B) can do 52/48/40/32/24/16/12/8 on write, and 24/16/12/10/4 on rewrite.

I think that's what it said, but what do you think about the burner, and what is CAV?

CAV is constant angular velocity
CLV is constant linear velocity
