Building a new machine...hows this?

I would get at least an ATI 9600 XT video card. A 9800 Pro would be even better.

No, what i'm asking is:

With the AMD2600+, how high up in the vdeocard specs can i go untill i get bottlenecked?

Depends on the program. When you say bottlenecked, you mean by the CPU, correct? If so, an Athlon XP 2600+ will benefit from a better card in most cases. Some programs are more CPU limited, some more graphics limited. It just depends. As Mar H said, a 9600-9800 would be a good range. I'd reccomend a 6600, as it would be faster and similarily priced. It is the latest technology, so you won't be buying a dated card.

I hope to get my next system with 3 years.  :P

Of course, I'll have to get a laptop in less then two for college, but I'd never have a laptop as my primary system. By the time I get a new system, it'll be an Athlon128 6000+.

Looks good.  Suggest that you double the RAM as soon as you can afford it though as that 256 is going to hold it back.

Good luck with it.

thanks, im going to try and do that, as soon as i can afford it.... :)

my freind has an Athlon 2100+ (1.7GHz) and 1Gig of RAM, an 8500LE ad he can play Doom 3 at around 20-30FPS which, in my opinion is awesome. So, im assuming, once i get a better video card and more ram, my system might be a bit better...

Maybe he has a reason, like video editing.

Anyways, it is possible to achieve those frame rates on a vairity of systems with low graphical settings. Is it at 800x600 at high settings? Doubtful on his system.

Actually, it's cause I'm running VMWare..and need the extra RAM to run various virtuallized OSs. I run VMWare under slackware linux, virtual os's are win2k, winxp, slack 8, slack 10, and even win 98
