Hi all,
Just purchased a used server, i am new to the server world but, old to the hosting one as i run my own hosting service.

Anyway this old server was spotted in a Dublin auction which i bid on and won.

I guess it is a windows server as it has W2000 on a sticker.

It has a P3 in a slot on the board and an empty slot for a second one.

4 HD slots, 3 with blanks and the 1st containing a 18.2-GB SCSI drive.

on the rear is a 10/100 card LAN connection with video out, Video out is not working!I guess that why it was sold!

I know it is possible to add a P3 and 3 other drives but wondering is it worth modernising, any opinions?

It is virtually impossible to say because there is no way of knowing the actual condition of the components and how long the server was in use and under how much activity stress.  SCSI drives are the most reliable but not indestructible.  Power Supply would be the first place I looked for quality of construction.  I would not really want to put a lot into it because whatever you did not replace would pull the reliability of the system down to that level.  I probably would look for bargains on Ebay just to get server functioning, and go from there.

While rooting through my boxloads today for an old modem i came across an SCSI drive so i decided to install it on the old server.
I will probably come across a video card one of these days and get a good look at what is exactly on the box!

I doubt if it will ever be any good as a hosting platform but, it may be good for a backup system!

This is the modern equivalent to getting an old car running, just for the sake of getting it running to prove you can do it.  Go for it!   ;)

AH!
My old 1959 Morris Minor (Purchased for £11) ran again after 3 days work!

Anyway i tried installing 4 different video cards in a spare slot but none of them worked!

Maybe the board is on its way out!
Beginning to slow down the hopes of joy at this stage :'(
