Well, I've been waiting for a friend of mine to thank you for this one, but he's a clod.

Over the weekend while I was showing off the forum, we tried this tip on his machine with an AOL freebie frisbie and it worked great. AOL made it a little hard to find the IE install, hiding it a few folders deep, but we found it.

Amazingly, my friend had uninstalled IE 4 and OL Express from his machine from ADD\REMOVE PROGRAMS without serious consequences, but Netscape 6 was giving him fits.

After a crash and reinstalling things, and IE from a vendor I have been able to eliminate the pesky vendor logo from IE.

On the other hand the outlook program continues to stay "branded"

Any tips?

thanks

scuzzy

obiwan,

You're ahead of me in that department. I've never tried removing the icons, and never even gave it much thought. I just figured I was stuck with it.

Hello Scuzzy

Try this

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\CUSTOM

Either delete the 22x22 and 38x38 logo or replace them with something you want. In my case that being wifeeee so she will let me buy more STUFF!

from your earlier post:

title bar will say "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by MSN/AOL". Easy fix in the registry, though. Mine now reads "IE5 provided by my Grandma".

I cannot seem to fix this for outlook, IE i fixed.

For those of us not brave enough to hack around in the registry, X-Setup from(www.xteq.com)gives an easy solution to those annoying title bars in IE & OE.  You can call 'em what you like.  Loads of other tweaks for Windows, free, too. ;-)

Living1,

Thanks for poasting that tip. We appreciate anything that makes computing easier, and anything that puts the control back into our hands.

Welcome to our forum, too.

I got this tip from Fred's Langa List.

I picked up one of those free CDs to install MSN and took it home where I placed the CD in my CD-ROM. However, I chose not to do an MSN installation. Instead, I went over to the folder that holds the IE5 files and found the IE5 setup file and opened it. Within a few minutes I had IE 5.5 along with Outlook Express 5.5 installed on my computer.

It was simple and free. Much better than ordering the CD from Microsoft, and better than downloading the setup files through the internet.

Oh yeah, you can also accomplish the same thing with AOL 6.0 disks, but with the MSN disks you'll get the IE5.5 installation menu. I found that the AOL disk simply does a standard installation without the Outlook Express update. Whatever, either works. One thing though, you'll end up with the MSN logo (or AOL logo) on the top right of the IE screen, plus the title bar will say "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by MSN/AOL". Easy fix in the registry, though. Mine now reads "IE5 provided by my Grandma".

TIP: Hold down the Shift key while the CD door closes on the CD. This way, the autorun feature won't activate, thus prompting the installation setup for the ISP. Then, use explorer to navigate the contents of the CD.
