I have a QP6/P3 450  SM-1X that I am about to make usable for my daughter, replacing a very old Dell notebook that is literally falling apart.
The machine will be for Web surfing and word processing.  She plays  no games and doesn't need a DVD player.

This unit has the BioStar M6TBA ver 1.3 and a 235-250(?) watt PSU., purchased 9/99.  Memory is 200+m.
I am going to replace the 6g maxtor HD with a 20g WD 7200, 2m cache and install Win98SE.
I upgraded the video card with a Gigabyte/ATI 9200 about a year ago.

Any other recommendations?

I have thought about the PSU but I don't know if the Quantex one is  standard .
Total budget here is about $200 and I've commited about $70 (including a new mouse and keyboard combo) thus far.

Thanks,

Bill

That computer should be pleanty for word processing and internet. Does she need CD-RW for file storage?

Cars,
She tells me she keeps all her really important stuff on a USB "jump drive".
So I guess the answer is no.  $30.00 to the good.

I guess I will go ahead with the new HD  and run it awhile to see how it behaves.

Just before I retired it, I was having to reboot a couple times a day, which may have been simply a need to reinstall the O/S which hadn't been done in several years.  But I was beginnning to wonder about the PSU.

Thanks,
Bill

It may be best to replace the PSU before it goes and does some damage especially if it was causing reboots.  Quantex used standard ATX PSUs.

Bill

Thanks, Chandler.   That is what I needed to know.

As far as a RAM upgrade, as long as it's pre WinXP, 256MB of RAM is enough for basic tasks.
