Joanie

Thanx PP for the solution and the e-mail.

I use to play Clue but today I haven't got a Clue.

Joanie

n/a

So? Does that make me special? Do I get a cookie?

Heh Heh Heh, I actually sat here with a piece of paper and worked the durn thing out and it took about 20 to 30 minutes dang nab it. But it was a good brain game so thanks.

This is for Joanie and Bear.

2mcabre had it  on the buton.

Two versions of solution:

Ver.1:

Labelling the house from left to right as on a page (hope thisdoesn't wrap)

Number            1         2             3              4        5

Colour          Yellow    Blue           Red          Green       White

Nationality    Norwegian  Danish      British         German       Swede

Drink           Water     Tea         Milk            Coffee        Beer

Smoke           Dunhill   Blend       Pall Mall       Prince      Blue Master

Pet             Cats      Horses       Birds           FISH

Dogs

Its the German , in the Green House and he drinks coffee and smokes prince.

Ver 2:

The answer is the German

This dang thing took me a solid 30 minutes, and when I ran out specific

data correlations, I was stuck with some trial and error.  Maybe that's

the point.  Then again, maybe I broke the rules.  Reminds me of the

board game "Clue."

Okay - here's the long-winded logic (I intend to save this bit so I

don't EVER have to go through this again):

1) The Norwegian lives in the first house and is next to blue. The

middle house drinks milk.

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:            Blue

Nat'l:     Nor

Bev:                      Milk

Anim:

Smoke:

2) Because green is left of white, and red is British, house #1 (Norw)

can only be yellow.  Yellow smokes Dunhill.  And horses are next to

Dunhill.

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:     Yellow  Blue

Nat'l:     Nor

Bev:                       Milk

Anim:              Horse

Smoke:     Dunh

3) Because green drinks coffee and the center house #3 drinks milk,

green can only be house #4 (since green is left of white).  That rounds

out the house colors and green's beverage.  Now that we know where the

red house is, we can tag the British who lives there.

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:     Yellow  Blue    Red     Green   White

Nat'l:     Nor             Brit

Bev:                       Milk    Coffee

Anim:              Horse

Smoke:     Dunh

4) The remaining clues didn't spell it out for me.  The only thing I

could think of was some trial and error, based on the following.

Swede keeps dogs (house #4 or 5 only)

Dane drinks tea (house #2 or 5 only)

German smokes Prince (house #2, 4 or 5 only)

Pall Mall smoker keeps birds  (house #3, 4 or 5 only)

Bluemaster drinks beer (house #2 or 5 only)

Blend next to cats and water (house #2, 3 or 4 only)

5) Plugging the Swede in house #4 and the Dane in house #5, we wind up

with the German in house #2.  But this breaks the Bluemaster drinks beer

(open smokes all have a beverage assigned).

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:     Yellow  Blue    Red     Green   White

Nat'l:     Nor     Germ    Brit    Swede   Dane

Bev:                       Milk    Coffee  Tea

Anim:              Horse           Dog

Smoke:     Dunh    Prince

5) Plugging the Swede in house #4 and the German in house #5, we wind up

with the Dane in house #2.  But this also breaks the Bluemaster drinks

beer (same reason).

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:     Yellow  Blue    Red     Green   White

Nat'l:     Nor     Dane    Brit    Swede   German

Bev:               Tea     Milk    Coffee

Anim:              Horse           Dog

Smoke:     Dunh                            Prince

6) Plugging the Swede in house #5, the Dane can only go in house #2,

which puts the German in house #4.  Bingo!

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:     Yellow  Blue    Red     Green   White

Nat'l:     Nor     Dane    Brit    German  Swede

Bev:               Tea     Milk    Coffee

Anim:              Horse                   Dog

Smoke:     Dunh                    Prince

7) Add in the Blend next cat/water.  Only fits house #2, with water in

house #1.  The cat still may go in house #1 or 3.  But the Pall Mall

smoker keeps birds, and can only go in house #3, so cat goes in house #1

also.

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:     Yellow  Blue    Red     Green   White

Nat'l:     Nor     Dane    Brit    German  Swede

Bev:       Water   Tea     Milk    Coffee

Anim:      Cat     Horse   Bird            Dog

Smoke:     Dunh    Blend   Pall    Prince

8) Last but not least, Bluemaster drinks beer, and can only go in house

#5.

Number:    1       2       3       4       5

Color:     Yellow  Blue    Red     Green   White

Nat'l:     Nor     Dane    Brit    German  Swede

Bev:       Water   Tea     Milk    Coffee  Beer

Anim:      Cat     Horse   Bird            Dog

Smoke:     Dunh    Blend   Pall    Prince  BluMstr

The fis is left to house #4, which is home to the German.

As hard to explain as to do.  Ughh.
