2 Problems with Windows

I'm using Windows XP and I have two issues. First, when I try to shut down or reboot, it gets stuck on the desktop for about 5 minutes and then shuts down. I think it has something to do with logging off  because when I'm not logged on a username then my computer shuts down normally. My second problem is whenever I try to right click on the desktop it takes a few seconds for the menu to load. Does anyone know a solution to either of these problems?

*GASP* it makes me wonder what the record is.. most i ever had to run for was 27 hours..

also try the msconfig trick to stop unwanted items loading at startup. if you recognise something you know you don't need it will certainly speed startups and should be quicker running normally.

i dont know what the record is.... all i can say is that was a very boring week.. but now its nice and speedy again

i have it set now to turn on my computer @12am every night and run defragmenter....

Try this:
1) Start -> Run -> Regedit -> OK
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
3) Change the value of WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 2000
4) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
5) AutoEndTasks = 1
6) WaitToKillAppTimeout = 2000
7) Reboot

I don't have intimate knowledge of XP.. am using 2000 Pro.
From what was mentioned so far, I do have several suggestions.

1. install Norton utilities and clean things out.
(avoid their defrag if it advises against it due to SP versions.)

2. install AVG virus control, update it and run a complete virus scan.

3. install Sygate firewall and run it.

4. Install SpyBot S&D, update it and run it.

5. install AdAware 6.0, update it and run it.

6. install and run Winpatrol.
This last one will show progams running upon boot. You can ascertain the ones you do not want and stop them permanently with a mouse click.

I mention these simply because they are the ones I use.
You mighy get lucky and the problem will be gonzo.

And did you try the repair function of XP if there is one?
