So I just ordered a new CPU for my computer. The Retail X2 3800+ 939 is back at Newegg for less than ever, $129.99 shipped, and I doubt they will last. They already disappeared for several months.
I plan on building a new computer for the store anyways, and my current 3000+ running at 3500+ speeds in my Epox board that replaced my deffective one should handle the task. I have configured an Entermax case/PSU setup and a 7600GS that will go in this build. Also, I will order 2GB of GSkill, put it in my computer, and give the new build my OCZ.
If this all works out, and we decide to go ahead with the new build, I'll have as my main desktop a dual core AMD, hopefully clocked at 2.45Ghz and 2 gigs of memory. Hopefully this should help windows run even more seemlessly, especially with multiple programs.
Quick question, are there any MS patches I should get when I install the dual core? I downloaded, but have yet to install AMD's 2 patches/utilities for their X2 CPUs, anything else?

Cant think of any but as far as the dual core patches from amd.. have you heard about this one?
There have been some peeps having issues with certain games, usually running games to fast. Might want to consider the patch talked about here.

Well, the first two they list are the ones I downloaded, though I probably have later versions, since this was from 05. Hopefully, they will not have any issues, but I will use that thread for reference if I do. Thanks!

You will need the AMD processor driver if you wish to play games.
Also, Knowing how to set the affinity in windows is a big bonus for those applications and games which still get confused by dual cores.
Okay, its in.
However, the new heatsink had a very strange plastic clip vs my old one, and actually broke on installation, so I had to put my old heatsink and fan in. Some of the thermal compound from the new heatsink was on the new CPU when I put it in, and I just put my old one on top of that. It seemed like overall, it should have enough compound. I actually left my overclock settings as is with multiplier on auto, and it booted the first time running at 2450Mhz. Yeah man!
I booted to windows, it detected new processor, restart, AMD dual core optimizer, restart, and then stress and temp tests. I turned off RMclock, as it acted strange with stepping the dual core, so I am always at 2450Mhz 1.35V at the moment. Idle is about 38C, however, I setup Prime95 to run the hardest CPU stress test, and 2 instances for both core usage, and after about 10-15minutes, temperature peaked at 62C!
It is kind of warm, but that should be worse case scenario. I tested with a normal heavy load, and it didn't go over 52C. I don't know if there is any difference between my old 3000+ heatsink and the new 3800+ X2 heat sink, but could that lead to higher temps?
I called AMD, and they are sending me a new heatsink and I will send back the old one. Should I attempt to put the new one back on my X2, or should I use it for my rebuild with my 3000+ later?

I am running 50Mhz faster than the 4800+, and I beat the 4800+ in every CPU benchmark in Sisandra, and my temperatures are about what xbitlabs got. I guess it's okay for now, still, I'm hopping it will get better as the thermal compound sets.
Well, I got the new heat sink today, yet another design, and I went to put it on my computer, and I could not get the blasted thing to clip properly. After fighting it for 30 minutes, I put the old one back on. My max burn temperature is now hovering 60-61 instead of 62, so maybe I got a better thermal paste contact this time?
Anyways, I hooked up the new heat sink to my Epox replacement board with my venice out of a case, and I got the heatsink on in 5-10 minutes, though it was REALLY stiff. My initial one is pretty easy to put on and off. I cannot believe they can't make a consistent heat sink design.
Anyways, I am done messing with this heatsink thing. Never going above 61C is fine. I could add a frontal or side 80mm fan to my case, but I don't think the help would be worth the noise and clutter.
Nice cars. The only AMD system I have left is a 4000+ single core running @ 2.7 Ghz. I'm not much of a multitasker generally so I really don't need dual core on this thing (yet) and I have another system with an e6600 that will do that, but even with the sick speed e6600 speed I still love my AMD system.
I have never understood why AMD uses only two heatsink clips. Aftermarket replacements use four. I always sweat when I clamp a heatsink down because of the extreme pressure, in my opinion, that is applied. I always expect to pop the mainboard CPU platform mount clip. I really do not think applying that much pressure is necessary.
