Can you get an MSDOS prompt?

BlueIce

If your asking if you can boot to a command prompt I havent tried yet

but there is a command prompt in windows like in win2k

Its a mix of win2k and 98 with more of the win2k about it

if i needed to get to a command prompt I know in win2k i can get there by booting off of the cd and going through a couple menus

XP just like 2k supports NTFS as Well as FAT32

My friend upgraded on his computer and I installed on another partittion on my computer

There is lots of new eye candy but its all customizable It is a whole new deal

Just like when I was running win3.11 and got win95

Mornin Blue Ice,

Thanks for the report. I am very interested in XP, mostly because I would like to get rid of ME. Have you read anything about the installation of XP over ME. I do not need a business OS since I am only using it for home use.

I am evaluating WINXP Pro

There will be a home version as well as the pro

And as far as over Win me shouldnt be any problems my friend upgraded from 98

What I have seen so far it is like win2k pro but unlike any O/S

I have ever seen a much more 3D feel to menus and icons

Thanks for letting us in on this, BlueIce. I'm sort of torn, here. I just installed Win2K Professional on my Dell, and I love it. It kills me that I waited so long to try it, as it is infinitely superior to Windows 98. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I should have upgraded to Win2K Pro when it first came out.

As for Windows XP, I'm more interested in the professional version vs. home. I know it will cost more, but I got a feeling it will be money well spent. However, I'm not too sure I want XP until Microsoft ditches Windows Product Activation (WPA). If Microsoft is determined to hang on to WPA, then I probably won't bother upgrading. Time will tell. Until then, you'll have to fight if you want to take Win2K Pro away from me.

WinXP comes with it already

I would like to give you an update

let me remind that my evaluation version is not the final

But I have noticed some issues with games and drivers

Irq problems for a friend of mine but that was a swift fix

Older systems may have minor issues as well a bios upgrade may be needed on some systems

Other than that it handles the systems resources just like win2k and is faster than 98 or 2k

Networking seems to be a bit of a trick as well on my peer to peer

BlueIce,

Did you install a dual boot configuration? Was it even an option? I am considering the possibility of giving it a try over the weekend, since it's time to clean my Dell out once more. I was planning on removing my dual boot and going to all Win2k Pro. But...

Well, I signed up for a download, so we'll see. By chance does it come with Space Cadet 3D Pinball? That's about the only computer game that I actually enjoy.

Comes with a couple new games but your pinball is there

Be forewarned that if you have a dialup connection 24 or more hours to download

500 megs

with T1 40 min

with T3 2 min

You will need a cdburning program to extract files from the ISO image scuzzy

I do have broadband, along with a CD burner. I read at the site that the download takes 5 hours with a DSL connection. Exactly how big is the stupid file? Geez.

What kind of connection do you have, and how long did it take the file to download?

500 megs or better

I borrowed a T1 so it took about 40 min

http://www.poasters.com/images/ice.gif" border=0>

scuzzy

511,680,512 bytes to be exact.

I downloaded the WinXP Professional file a little while ago, and I was surprised that it took 21 mins, 5 secs, on my broadband connection. Dang that's slow. I noticed that the download would have only taken 1 min, 49 secs, on a T3 connection. I wonder if Sprint Wireless Broadband has one of those available.

Anyway, I'll look at installing WinXP Pro on a second partition sometime over the weekend.

First you pick up a super CD burner for pocket lint, now you're complaining about a 500 meg download in less than half an hour.

You're really trying to depress me, aren't you.

http://www.poasters.com/images/bear.gif" border=0>

BlueIce

Sounds like somebody has the hook up Bear

http://www.poasters.com/images/ice.gif" border=0>

scuzzy

Bear,

I'm sorry to depress you. Actually, I was pleasantly surprised that the download went so quick. I started it at about 8 p.m. last night, when my connection is typically bogged down compared to my connection at 6 or 7 a.m., when it's typically very fast.

What really caught my attention was how fast I could expect a 500MB download with a T3 connection running at 80% capacity. 1 minute, 49 seconds. Wow! I believe a T3 connects at 36Mbps (look again, that's "Mbps" not "Kbps"). Just think - years from now that will be considered "painfully" slow.

What an ironic time to read this poast, as I sit here writing out my payment to ATT Broadband. Of course they offer no broadbands to our area just tv.

I have been looking at satellite again. Combination pc/tv. If you just had to pay for the service and got all the equipment included. That would be ok. You would still pay a bit more. When you figure buying the dishes. Yeah, and you figure all those high tech gadgets you got to have to make it work, phew. I would also have to put up a antenna for local stations.

Heck, you could build a computer with all the good stuff . I'm going to keep an eye on that satellite stuff, I think them prices are going to be coming down.

In the meantime I'll just be content with Scuzzy's reports from the future.

A real  time traveler, that one.

And to think, I thought 'painfully slow' was 2.2 Kbps.

Here's a must-read article I found through PC911: The Gazette - Microsoft Windows XP. You'll find some *excellent* information there that will really open your eyes.

I'll probably attempt a dual boot with Win2k and WinXP sometime tomorrow evening. We'll see how it goes.

Careful with your dual boot I have been playing in XP so much and didnt relize

that when I installed XP on my D drive my win2k on C drive

Had been changed a little nothing big just lost Favorites,Email, address book

and Irq's went out for dinner too

I hope you got the final build that would be so cool

I won't go into all the details, but I chose to clean install Windows XP Pro as the *only* operating system. So far, I'm impressed. It is rock-solid, and loaded with great features. I hate to say this, but I think Microsoft finally got it right.

I still don't like the Windows Product Activation, although I have a clearer understanding that it's not the threat that some believe it to be. However, I can now see that it may be a problem for people who are constantly updating hardware.

Scuzzy,

Now that you have XP and that new digital camera. I would appreciate hearing how well XP supports digital imaging. I read somewhere they were going to make a lot of improvements in that area.

Thanks
