I have a Sony VAIO R505JS with a Pentium III 850mhz chip. Can I go to a faster processor like a 1.7 ghz? And what particular model should I look for?

No.  You have a PIII board, so a P4 is out of the question.

You may be able to upgrade to a 1 GHz Celeron or P3 processor - but that's about it.  Beyond that, the design of the CPU changes and your board likely won't support anything faster.
