DV Cam Not Recognised By my Vaio FX201

My Vaio is Windows ME and has an i-link / firewire port and software which were pre-installed by Sony.

Problem; my Panasonic NV-GX7B DV Camera is not (or appears not to be) recognised by the Vaio when they are connected by firewire.

Both DVGate and MovieShaker state that the DV Cam is 'not connected'. The 'Capture' button is greyed out on both applications. DVGate's main window states that the DV Cam is 'off line'.

As a result I cannot capture live or taped DV.

Confusingly - if I switch off the DV Cam, while it is still connected, the Vaio hangs and stays that way until I again switch on the DV Cam.

I should add that the DV Cam connects quite happily to my Desktop PC, allowing Video Capture and Device Control by Pinnacle Studio Version 8.

So - can anybody help me get my DV Cam and Vaio to work together?
