Fax software

I have been using the 3Com program Rapid Comm, which works quite well.  
It does however use a proprietary file format that makes it impossible for others to use the file electronically.  I have been unsuccessful in finding a file converter that would allow me to convert to a .doc or .rtf format.

Anyone know of another, freestanding fax program I might try that uses some standard file format?

This is a Win98SE machine.
