I only have one question: Will Opera coexist with IE5?

Right now I have this page open in both Opera and IE 5.5, my default browser. Although I clicked the link to your poast from my email, giving IE a head start, Opera opened it first.

IE hasn't crashed yet with both open, nor have there been any noticeable conflicts. I don't know how IE would behave with Opera as the default, but if I get brave enough I'll let you know.

Another nice feature of Opera is the right-click page reload option. You can enable page reloading at intervals of five seconds to thirty minutes. But I just found out you should NOT have it enabled when you're composing a message.

Are you fed up with MS\Internet Exploder and Netscape\AOL bloatware? Well, I am. Seems like I spend half my time troubleshooting one or the other. So I finally downloaded Opera, the grandmama of them all, which is now free with an ad banner. (The banner disappears on full-screen mode and can be configured to show ads only from your areas of interest.) It costs $39 ($20 for educational use) to register it and ditch the  banner, which is integrated into the menu bar.

I am impressed with it. For one thing, it's a far smaller program--less than 10 meg even with the optional Java-enabled version. Even so, it offers features the Big Two might not have for years. The multiple document interface is just sweet. So far it's as stable as reinforced concrete, faster than either of its competitors, easily configurable, setting preferences is a whiz, it automatically imports your default browser's bookmarks -- in fact, I have yet to find anything I don't like about it.

Well, it is a little more picky about HTML, but is that really a bad thing? And Opera has a code verifier link in its Help section to help you troubleshoot any pages that don't load correctly. The only site I've had trouble with, ironically, is this one -- the forum colors were named rather than referred to as hexidecimals, which was an easy fix and should have been changed anyway.

My suggestion: if you have some time on your hands, give it a spin. You might be pleasantly surprised.
