Hi doug,

just shut down the program(s) that is trying to write to the drive. If you're not sure which one(s) it is, ctrl-alt-del to get a list of running programs. Then, End Task one at a time until Scan Disk will run (be sure not to End Task explorer or systray, you need those). Often it is your antivirus software that is causing the holdup, so I'd try temporarily disabling that first, and see if that fixes the problem.

Apparently Scan Disk needs complete quiet in order to do it's job. Let us know if you need more help with this.

Hi, Doug, and welcome.

This is a common problem, usually caused by a program loaded in your Startup menu running in the background. Often it's an anti-virus program like Norton or McAfee. You can do a ctrl-alt-delete to close any such programs one-by-one (all except Windows Explorer and Systray), or you can download a free utility called End It All, which does it for you a lot easier.

Don't forget to disable your screensaver also.

A while back Neon poasted a link to the LangaList search engine results for discussions of other defrag problems and solutions. You might want to check that link out if closing down your running programs doesn't do the job.

If you still have problems, let us know.

That reminds me - along the same lines as what Bear suggests, you may also wish to try   Startup Cop  from PC Magazine. It allows you to control which programs launch at startup, including those in the start menu AND those that run directly from the windows registry. You can then enable or disable as you wish, so that only the programs that are absolutely necessary launch at startup, plus whatever others you like.
