Hey Neon,

Great review. Almost makes me wish I was in the market for a new scanner.

I like that part about being able to scan slides and negatives. I always wondered how well those worked.

I have been using a HP 1170cse all in one flatbed scanner printer going on 4 years now.It has been a very dependable unit.

Down the road I?m thinking I would like to have a better scanner with the ability to scan slides and film.

Maybe one day this HP will give it up.

patman,

Thanks, this must have been the longest review I have written for Poasters. This has been a fun scanner to play around with. I don't know why I didn't get one sooner, since now I keep thinking up new projects to do with it.

The slides and negatives capability is definately a bonus. Some other online reviews suggest that nearly every scanner in this price range does a poor job on color negatives. The results are often too dark. However, in my informal tests, good scans of color negatives were obtained. The software makes a big difference, apparently.

I am not a photography expert, so my opinions about scan quality are definately amateur. A professional would need really high quality at very high resolution (>2500 dpi), and might need to scan more than 6 at a time, so would choose a more expensive machine. See also flatbed-scanner-review.org for some comments on realistic limitations of scanners. For my daily home use dabbling with photos, this Epson certainly works.

Neon,

I too appreaciate the great review. It is always helpful when someone is simply thorough and honest in their evaluations. It helps the rest of us clowns in our decisions.
