hi gang ! i got 250 bucks for a system build ...
i dont have to buy everything right now though
i will be temporarily using my existing hard drive,
cd rom drives, keyboard , monitor, mouse, and floppy drive.. i want this build to be a good gaming pc.... so  i ve got estimates but if there off as far as perfomence goes tell me otherwise ;D

mobo cpu combo (looked at price watch )- 80-125 bucks
case with power supply- 25 to 40 bucks
512mb ddr ram (does it matter the 2700 or 3200 etc?)-75-80 bucks.
and of course the vid card which through a friend maybe 50 bucks 128 mb either ati or nvidia..

so what do you think is this possible?
take note that im not some picky guy that likes some huge screen res

query

You're not going to get much in the way of quality with a $25-40 case and power supply - budget at least $75 for a decent power supply and case.

If you're willing to stick to old-generation or low-end CPU/video/mainboard, you can probably come in with the rest of them on budget.

What about the operating system?  You need to budget for a copy of XP (unless you plan to use Linux).

that stuff i posted ainto gonna cut it???
or are you in comparison to richie rich
super computers pentium 7 4.7 gigahertz
monsters.. lol am i missing something?

query

I wouldn't entrust the other parts to a system with a case and power supply for $27.  A halfway decent 400W power supply will run about $50-60.   Anything less is playing with fire -- and a marginal power supply can take out other components.

Look for a board with a VIA chipset - SiS's Athlon chipsets are not particularly good performers.

ok how about this...(cant find the word via anywhere)is this via?

The KT266a is a Via chipset, it is however rather dated. You should be able to find a more current chipset for a modest price.
Look for a Via KT 600 chipset or the nVidia nForce 2 if you want dual channel ram capabilities.
Via has also released the KT 880, which also has the ability for dual channel ram.

If you're looking to economize, the KT-400 and KT-600 chipset boards are not expensive.

halokid

ok then what processor should i get with that ? :Dthanks

query

The Barton (2500/333) is the best bargain in Athlon chips.  If you factor in a $50 board, decent case and power supply ($75) and that CPU ($80 or so), you're not going to meet your $250 criterion if you want 512 M of RAM and a decent video card.

halokid

thanks query , so maybe for temporary cash flow, i might wait out on gettin a vid card and use my 32mb one for a little while

halokid

the only thing im wonerding about the case/ps combo is are you payiong extra for the case design or for the power supply?

how can you tell?

pat

That would vary widely by manufacturer.
If you?re looking for a modestly priced solidly built case, check into the Antec Performance Plus series cases or Solution Series cases.

Have a look at the Antec cases/power supplies. You can get one with a 300 watt power supply for 60 to 75 dollars. Antec power supplies are good as well as their cases.

halokid

ok so what about that case power supply combo for 49 bucks on pats link there the top one thats white?

pat

If you could squeeze out another $17 the SX630 is easier to work in and it comes with case fan, the first one doesn?t.
Take a look at the pictures of each of them, just click on the links for the cases, then click on the picture link.

that link above might be what im going to get good price ? or is there more bang for the buck?
(its a via chipset) and once again i thank you for your comments and patience :D

Bill

the parts separately @ newegg are about $140 with free shipping.

If you have to pay for shipping its probably even.
Do you know the reputation of the vendor?

luddite brings up a good point, take a look at PartsPc.com rating from Reseller Ratings. They do not get a very good rating at all and if you take the time to read the reviews you will find many references to this company baiting with a low price combo and then switching to a higher priced in stock item.

For computer hardware, Newegg rules just as B&H Photo Video rules for Photography items. I use them both.
