If you only require a basic antivirus package, then take a look at Avira Personal (http://www.free-av.com/), which is always free of charge.
Do you happen to anythig about file size? I just upgraded from AVG 7 to 8 and the file size tripled to 46k.
I also didn't see anything on the site about updating the Free version. Are you using it now?

I'm not using Avira, but I wanted to pass this on to everyone.
I know Avira has a strong following and performs exceptionally well. But since it's not currently installed on any of my systems, I can't answer about the file size.
As far as updating the Free Version, are you referring to the signature updates? As I recall, it was not much different from AVG.
I was asking about virus definitions. AVG updates every day.

I believe Avira's updates are also daily. I haven't used it in awhile, so I don't exactly remember.
