Scuzzy, I have purchased 7 Samsung Syncmaster 17" monitors primarily the 700NF and except for a slight geometric tilt, that is not really noticable they are by far and away the best value. The Samsung Syncmaster 753DF was considered and at a street price of $196.00 a really good value. The Syncmaster 700NF comes in at a street price of about $290.00 about $100.00 more than the 753DF. Both are great values. Dollar for dollar they perform as good if not better than Sony, Viewsonic, and NEC and at a better price. Samsung has come a long way and that article shows why.

John,

Here's the deal: I bought a KDS Rad 5s (15" LCD Flat Panel) from Sams Club for $339 + tax, which I returned due to a stuck red pixel near the center of the screen. I then headed over to The Office Depot, and bought a KDS Rad 5 (without the "s"), and I returned it earlier today for stuck pixels near the "Start" button, and also at the top-right of the monitor. I have decided to go back to Plan A, which is to buy a CRT.

Of course, Samsung was at the top of the list for monitors to consider. I saw the 753DF at Best Buy for $199.99, minus a $40 rebate. However, I'm strongly considering the 700ift from Computers4Sure.com for $219.99 + 20.92 S/H (total of $240.91). Unfortunately, it doesn't come with any rebates. However, the recommended resolution for this little jewel is 1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz, or it'll handle 1024 x 768 at a whopping 119Hz. Not bad for a $240 monitor.

Another plus is that the 700ift is only 16.5" deep, as opposed to the 700nf, which is 17.6" deep. I really do need the shorter monitor, due to very tight space constraints. The 900sl (19") is also only 16.5" deep, but at $437.91 delivered, it's just a hair more than I wanted to pay.

I was looking at monitors at newegg and this one caught my eye HITACHI CM721F 19 INCH FLAT-FACED SHORT NECK http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=19&manufactory=1095 , what a price for a 19 in flat screen crt.

I have to say that at 18.5 in deep, I really don?t see how they can call it a short depth monitor. It does come with a 5-year warranty though.

I really can?t find to many reviews on it other than a couples of short blurbs at Sharky?s and Tom?s.

Anyway just thought I would pass this on.

patman,

The Hitachi certainly has a great price for a 19" monitor, but the depth is too much for my needs. You're right about one thing, I don't see how they can call it a short-depth monitor. I decided on the Samsung 700ift from Computers4Sure. As a matter of fact, I just ordered it a few minutes ago. I should have bought it last Friday, though, since the price went up $17 over the weekend. Even so, Computers4Sure still had the best price that I was able to find (when you factor in the S/H charges). The total price was $257.91, delivered to my front door. Another factor for going with Computers4Sure is that they are a known reputable dealer, which carries a lot of weight with me.

Blah. I had to call Computers4Sure to get an RMA for the monitor they sent. Unfortunately, I received a defective monitor (Samsung 700ift). Worse, I get to pay for shipping both ways, so I'll be out some $40 or $50. I may not be too eager to order another moniotor via mail after this.

The monitor lost considerable detail on the left and right edges. About 2 to 3 inches on the left, and about 1 to 2 inches on the right. The higher the resolution, the more noticeable it became. I still need a monitor, so I need to figure out what to do. Maybe a trip to BestBuy is in order.

My friend has a KDS 17" purchased at Office Max for 250.00 with 49.00 rebate. It has a Trinitron tube, flat screen and it is a beautiful little monitor. You might want to check out their 19" monitor. Everyone who sees the KDS is impressed with the color and the text. Me too.

Scuzzy, just a tip. I have had this Samsung Syncmaster 700NF for over a year and have had absolutely not one problem. It's been a best buy now for over a year. Just thought you might like to know. I already did some comparrison shopping for you Pricegrabber If this isn't the best monitor you have ever used I will not eat desert for a week. Believe me I live for desert.

Also just for my own interest what resolution was you monitor at.

John,

I appreciate the tip, but I'm not entirely certain that I'm willing to try mail order again. At least not now, as I'm still smarting from the shipping charges. Small items aren't a big deal, but the weight of a monitor can really add up. Odd that it cost just over $20 to ship it here via UPS ground, but it costs $45 to return it via UPS ground.

For now, I've decided that my Sony 220GS (17") is more than sufficient for my needs. Instead of trying to find a good enough replacement, I'm gonna buy an "okay" monitor (locally, not mail) to stay with the Dell system. After all, this old Trinitron gives a great picture, even at 1280x1024 @ 75Hz. Normally, I run it either at 1024x768 @ 100Hz, or 1152x864 @ 85Hz.

The more I think about this, it's very unlikely that I'll ever buy another monitor via mail, unless the vendor guarantees shipping both ways. This cat has learned his lesson. Ouch.

Scuzzy, absolutely I've had to return a few items myself including the first Samsng monitor they sent me. It cost almost twice what it cost to send it. I too have that shrinking page when in high monitor resolutions. Wonder why. I have a Nvidia GeForce 2mx 32MB 350mhz video card. It can handle very high resolutions. Oh well I like 800X600 at 32bit high color it runs great. Have fun.

Well, I just came back from BestBuy and CompUSA. I looked at several monitors, and was most impressed by the 19" Samsung 955DF. Although it is not at the top of Samsung's lineup, the display model looked quite nice, at least compared to a Mag Innovision and a ViewSonic that were next to it. The antiglare is really different (better) than the others. I like that the stand is relatively short, because I prefer the monitor close to the tabletop. It is certainly BIG, and probably quite heavy. BestBuy has it for $320-$40 rebate = $280. I didn't buy it because there's no rush to get one today, but it is my #1 contender right now.

Note to Scuzzy - BB and CompUSA both have the 17" 753DF if you are interested in that one, but I didn't look at it too closely.

Also had a peek at some of the LCD flat screen monitors. Let me say they knocked my socks off, in terms of clarity, brightness, and of course, high price. Wow.

I was looking for reviews on Samsung monitors, and came across this *excellent* review which was educational, as well as useful. Even if you're not in the market for a monitor, this is worth your time: Samsung Monitor Review
