Ok this might be a dumb question for some of you.

I'm thinking of buying a hard drive and i was looking at SATA hard drives.  My question is do i have to buy 2 hard drives when going SATA to operate them in RAID mode or can i just use 1 SATA hard drive?

query

You can run them one at a time, or in a RAID pair - either way.

If you buy a SATA OEM drive, make sure you purchase a power converter - many SATA drives do not have a standard 4pin Molex connector, and some mainboards come without them as well - and you won't be able to use the drive without the converter (a separate cable from the drive data cable, which usually does come with a mainboard).

Seagate's kits (and presumably others') come with all the cables you'll need.
