transfering files to new laptop?

i just purchased a new laptop with windows xp and im wondering if there is any way to hooked it up to my existing desktop(2000 pro) to tranfer over all my files. im looking to transfer approx 5 GB of files. so that would be inconvient to bunr it all to cd to transfer.
anyone got some ideas for me?

If the desktop has a network adapter, connect it to the notebook using a crossover Ethernet cable or a hub and pair of Ethernet cables.
