Lowering the tempurature will probably not improve performance

Maybe not but it will improve the reliability.  Failure rates of electronic components increase rapidly as operating temperature increases.

Im now looking at a Raptor 10,000 HD, and I will heat sink the CPU just to be sure, as ASUS or any top of line MB will be able to O/C, so you might as well just put the dang thing on it.
