toshiba dual monitor help

I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop.  I installed the Intel(R) Extreme Graphics 2 for mobile a while ago.  I am trying to use a magnavox flatscreen tv to use as a second monitor.  It has a "PC" mode which I have it set to.  I have the svga cable connected to each and when I go to change my Display Settings to "Extend My Windows Desktop onto this Monitor" the only thing that happens is that I can move my cursor and whatnot out of my main screen.  The other monitor is nothing but black.

I don't really know what the matter is.  I have tried changing the settings on the tv/monitor and nothing has helped.  Thank you for your time and help!

I turned off my notebook monitor and had the 2nd monitor my primary.  When I hit apply in the Display Properties dialogue box my monitor flickers for a second and then goes back to the normal monitor setup.
