2000? 98lite?

Primarily from a stability standpoint, which of the two would you go for: 2000 SP2, or 98se with 98lite?
This will be just an audio machine, BTW.

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with 98lite -- is that just the removal of the browser?  I use Windows 98SE, but Windows 2000 will be more stable out of the box.  With the proper drivers and tweaking 98SE can be very stable as well, but it takes some effort to get it to that point.

Forget Win98 altogether. I would suggest either Win2K, or WinXP. My preference is WinXP Pro, available in OEM version for about $139 from NewEgg, although they have the OEM Win2k Home version for $90. The only requirement to buy the OEM versions is that you must buy it in conjunction with hardware. Heck, a $6.00 IDE cable qualifies as hardware, so it's no big deal.

Instead of Win2k Home version for $90. Could that instead be WinXP Home version for $90.  LOL

Most come to the same conclusion, but then again, most also don't know what 98lite is.  :)

From what I saw, 98Lite is merely a customizable Windows installer, not an operating system. If you're looking for a different OS, consider either Linux, or something new(er) called LindowsOS 2.0.

Interesting.  I think I'll stick with 98SE though.

Yes, that's all that it is.  It's supposed to get rid of the garbage in Windows 98 to make it smaller and more stable.

I am familiar with 98lite, and have used Windows98 with 98lite extensively. I also have used Windows2000 SP2 extensively. In comparison, I'd say that the stability you gain with Windows 2000, and the fact that support for Windows 98 will go away soon, makes it the clear choice.

There are only a few caveats. If you have software that doesn't like Windows 2000, there could be trouble. When I migrated my primary system from Win98/98Lite to Win2K SP2, almost everything worked fine without a hitch. The one or two programs that didn't work were old, and I easily found suitable replacements for them.

Yeah, I know that one of my programs doesn't play very nice with 2000.  It works, but complains about it.  This program will become obsolete however with the new system, because while I'm spending some cash I'm going to spend more!  I've used the software I'm getting a few times in the past, and it loves 2000.  It also loves the sound card I've chosen, which also now works great with 2000 (or so I hear). I'm excited!!!  ;D
