Does anyone know what these both do, do they work synchronized or together? Is there a difference between the two and how do they usually work different than the system memory?
This may be a large topic so if anyone also has a link where I can read about it that would be great also.

System memory is always slower than the CPU - the L2 cache interfaces the two.  L1 cache is used internally to the CPU itself.
