Hi,

I have some large files on my laptop that I want to transfer onto my desktop PC.   The laptop doesn't have an internal CD-RW drive, only an old external (USB 1.1) writer that burns at a max. 2x.   Both computers have network ports and I'm wondering if I brought the "Belkin CAT 5e Crossover Cable" that we sell at work, whether I could use it to transfer the file across.   Would transferring them this way be faster than burning them onto CD (I would guess there are about 3GB worth in total)?   Also, would I need any software to use the cable, or could I just connect the computers together and use Windows Explorer to transfer the files across?   The laptop is running Windows XP Pro, and the desktop is running XP Home (both with SP 1).   Any info would be much appreciated.   Many thanks for your time.

Cheers,
Marc.

Heh, do you happen to know a decent (easy to follow) guide to setting up Windows Networking?  ;D

Cheers,
Marc.

i might have just that :P

Set pc 1 to ip address 125.126.2.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0

set pc 2 to ip address 125.126.2.2 same subnet mask (255.255.255.0)

try to ping pc 2 from pc 1 (start ? run ? type ?cmd? press enter ? ping 125.126.2.2

if you get a reply you?re in business (4 pings, 0% loss is good, about 0-1ms is good.)

If you get a time out error message, make sure that everything is set up correctly, and that the drivers are installed!

(to set up file sharing and internet sharing)

Right-click My Network Places and press Properties.
2. Right-click the appropriate connection and press Properties.
3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and press Properties.
4. Press Advanced and select the WINS tab.
5. If you have a static IP address, select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. If you have a DHCP-assigned IP address, select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server.
6.Press OK in all open dialogs to close and save the new settings.
7. You may have to restart all the computers in the workgroup to force a browser election.
