scrivener,

You didn't specify what the E: is supposed to be. Is it a logical drive from the hard drive? Is it a CD or DVD-ROM? Maybe a zip drive?

Also, what preferences were deleted?

Scuzzy,

Thanks for your reply.  My dysfunctional E:\ drive is my CD-ROM.  Preferences lost were E-mail messages and addresses, all WIN98 setup settings and preferences, including sound, display, desktop backgrounds, icons, etc., modem and mouse drivers and installation, printer driver, ISP connection settings.  I've restored most of this, but to keep on plugging, I need the CD-ROM drive.  Also, I can't seem to get rid of the DOS boot-options menu; I have to go through it every time I boot up.  Sounds like a litany, doesn't it?

Scrivener,

I wish I had a good answer for you, but I just can't figure out what may have caused this problem. I was hoping someone could come along and poast some possible fixes for you, as I simply have no ideas. The only solution I can think of is to reformat the hard drive, and then reinstall the OS. However, that can be an adventure in itself.

Is there a chance that you have some experience reformatting and reinstalling Windows? Depending on the machine and hardware, it can be smooth sailing, or it can be a hassle hunting down and reinstalling drivers to get everything to work properly. If reformatting is a consideration for you, it may be a good time to consider WinXP, assuming your machine has the muscle to handle it. If you're not into games, Win2k Pro is certainly worth considering, too.

Keep checking back, though. Hopefully, someone will poast the solution you need.

I reccently installed Office 2000 with preexisting win98SE.  This wiped out all my preferences.  Somehow during my reestablishing of preferences, I caused an E: drive glitch.  I physically load the disk (any one of several) and the blinking light goes off.  I click on the E:\ icon and get the "drive not yet ready" message.  On page 1 of bootlog I see [00168C5D] LOAD FAILED = ndis2sup.vxd.  Clicking on this file ID'S it as WINDOWS ndis real mode mapper.  Also on page 19 of bootlog is see [00168EDF] INITCOMPLETEFAILED = SDVXD.  I suspect these fails might have something to do with the E:\ glitch, but I don't know what they mean, or how to fix them.  Please help?
