As you've probably discovered, there are a wide range of graphics programs available for almost any type of project.  Perhaps you could narrow it down a bit by listing a few that you've been looking at.  Also, many programs have a free shareware or demo version that you can use for a period of time or with limited features, and then pay for the full version if you like it.  I use Adobe PhotoShop, but I run a web design company, and it may be way out of your price range.  JASC PaintShop Pro seems to be a popular choice for people looking for a slightly less powerful (and much less expensive) option, but I've never used it so I really can't give you my opinion of it.

Hi.  Thanks for the reply.  I own photoshop 6 but it is way to complex for me to figure out anything other than simple image editing.  I bought it to help costomers design album covers, but had no idea what I was getting into .  I want something for easy 2d animation.  I'd like to create a short comical flick about a guy spending tons of time trying to put out his last cigarette to be finished later, and at the end accidentaly dropping the whole thing down a drain or something.  I'll put some 30's fast jazz to the background.  It sounds funnier in my head.  Thanks.

There are many PhotoShop tutorials on the net that you may want to take a look at to help you get more familiar with it.  I would have to agree, though, that it's probably not the greatest choice for animation.  This may sound strange, but you may want to look into Flash instead of a graphics program.  It's much more geared to animation than a collection of gifs, and will result in a format that's much easier to distribute.

Hello.  I am looking for a good freeware application for creating 2d illustrations for some video ideas I have.  I know I should fork over some cash to get a real program but, I'm not really looking to make this a profession (audio production is what I do for a living, of course it's a rough one and I barely pay the rent).  I need something easy to learn with some fairly good options.  I've checked numerous sites but sinse I'm on a 56k I was hoping to get some good recomendations before downloading.  Thank you.
