Oh yes, by the way, the battery is Ni-MH...

I'm not familiar with that model, but I'd suggest looking in the bios or the Windows power management settings.

Thanks, but I have looked in the BIOS and Windows power management...

What OS did the notebook originally ship with?  If it was Windows95, you may need a BIOS update to allow for power management under 98.

Also check to see whether 98 was installed with ACPI enabled, or without it - it makes a difference (the latter is what is needed).

andrewjjones

When I got the computer, it had a blank hard drive (= no OS!).

There are only two BIOS updates on their website (one for 8GB+ HDs and the other for the infrared port)!

Can I check if ACPI was enabled? And if it is disabled, can I enable it?

Thanks!

ACPI should show up in CMOS setup.  Check with the manufacturer that you have a 98-compliant BIOS - many older notebooks (from 1997 and earlier) will not work properly with Windows98 without a BIOS update (and there are quite a few manufacturers that never provided such updates - 98 will work, but power management will not).

andrewjjones

There's nothing to do with ACPI in the BIOS! :(

I know it'll work with 98, because an older model (made by the same people) did.

Andy, I believe that Kapok is no longer in business. However this company has the same notebooks and offers support to some degree for Kapok notebooks such as BIOS updates and other downlads. Clevo. I do hope this helps.

Thanks John!

I know about Clevo... Kapok are still going. They're owned by the same company!

That's where I've been looking of the BIOS updates :)

Another problem...

I have got a Kapok 1300 notebook, and I've just bought an AC adaptor for it. Everything is fine. But, when I use the battery (adaptor disconnected), Windows 98 says that it's running on AC power! Is there anything in the system config utility to fix this?

Thanks again for any help!
