Anyone know what memory works best with Asus P5B-E  mobod?  Any specific brand?  Also, will I notice a difference between the 667 or 800 speed?

I am looking at this
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
Is there a difference between the 800 or 667 speed?  Will I notice it?  No overclocking intended.

If getting a Core 2 DUO processor, then get the DDR2 800 memory as it is matched to that processor. You might not notice the faster speed in normal computing, but you will be set if you upgrade to a quad core processor in the future.

As to memory, download the manual from the support page at Asus and you will find recommended memory manufacturers/models in it.

I don't think that is correct is it?

The native speed of the Core2DUO is 266MHz x 4 (quad bus) = 1067MHz
To run synchronously with the processor the memory would need to be 1066MHz but since we are talking about DDR2, we are actually talking about 533MHz memory - PC4200.

I am sure I have read an article that explains all this and remarks that using 667MHz memory with a conroe at stock speeds actually results in a slight performance hit due to running asynchronously with the FSB.  Using 800MHz memory (at 800MHz) is also asynchronous (at stock FSB) but the faster memory makes up for this.  If you are not going to overclock then the 800MHz memory over 533MHz is just not worth the extra money in my opinion.

Having said that, if you are going to overclock then the 800MHz memory is a must.  My E6300 is now overclocked from the stock 1.86GHz (7x266) to an insane 3.4GHz (7x487).

The Asus P5B can use the faster RAM, so might as well get it now in case he ever upgrades the CPU later. I probably should have saiid the motherboard is matched to the 800 speed RAM.
