Although I don't own anything Quantex, I am curious over your desire to upgrade to Windows Me. What is it about WinMe that appeals to you?

Thanks for your prompt reply. I, like many other windows users, have more than one machine. I like to use and understand the same OS on all machines I own. I loaded ME on my pc and it runs just fine. Furthermore, I suspect, as is the case with all windows software, more and more third party programs are going to be written for ME rather than 98. Additionally, I have not found 98 to be a pillar of stability anyhow. Finally, I suspect microsoft will soon issue their first ME patch (sigh) and perhaps fix some more problems.

So, those are the reasons driving this descision.

Neil - Thanks for your reply, too. I read up quite a bit on Windows Me, and most reviews don't recommend upgrading a current machine to Windoes Me from Windows 98. According to those reviews, most PCs don't take WinMe very well, unless the machine was designed with WinMe in mind. My biggest gripe with Me is that DOS access is disabled. I despise Microsoft for that decision. I'm also not impressed with the restore feature. I'd much rather use a program such as Power Quest Disk Image. That way, I'm in control vs. being at the mercy of Microsoft.

In addition to everything Scuzzy said, upgrading to ME on your system is not recommended for other reasons.  



If Me *was* available prior to your purchase but it was not an option on that machine, you can take that as a sign that there were *GOOD* reasons that OS was not an option.

But....



if you still want to upgrade, in addition to addressing your DVD and docking station drivers (if you have one), you also need to check for drivers/ compatibility issues for: video/ s-video out, sound, modem, infra-red

port, usb port and pcmcia slots.

Windows ME, or any subsequent release of Windows will never be the panacea for which people are seeking.



While subsequent versions *may* resolve *some* (few?) of the problems, shortcomings, errata, etc., of existing versions, there will never be a "perfect" (or even near-perfect) version of Windows.



And it seems that with each release of Windows, the gang in Redmond is taking more and more control away from the user.  Something I find arrogant and deplorable.



Newer releases of Windows is banking on the fact that many people *think* that somehow it will be/ has to be better.  And they ride that consumerism all the way to the bank while you get very little for your investment.  Unless, of course, you consider getting an abundance of aggravation your money's worth.



Just my humble opinion.  Ok, maybe not so humble.

OK, OK you are correct Quantex or their parent are SOB's of the first order, but I do have a w-1500 (notebook) running win98se quite smoooothly. What I would like to know if any of the poasters have upgraded their w-1500's or a similar Quantex notebook from 98 to ME? If so, what was the transition like? What procedure did you use? Did you have to uninstall ME and reinstall 98? Any problems (device drivers, etc) or advice?
