My Altec Lansing VS2421 computer speaker system consists of two satellites and one subwoofer.
All guides to subwoofer placement say to place subwoofer on floor (in corner if possible to augment bass output).
However, the most convenient placement of the subwoofer in my particular layout is on the top shelf of my computer rack (about a foot above my head when seated). I would place an acoustical isolation pad under the subwoofer.
Since the output of a subwoofer is theoretically non-directional, is there any downside to my intended placement ?
Try it and see (hear) how you like it. I have mine beneath the desk and it works out fine there.
Yeah Pat, I plan to. I was just interested to see if anyone had any reservations to offer about my proposed placement.
My present speaker system (to be replaced by the Altec Lansing) is the GNT5000, where the subwoofer is sitting on my monitor's shelf. No thought went into that placement, it was just expedient at the time.
By putting the sub on the shelf, you will introduce a lot of DIRECT vibration to the computer rack. I would put it on the floor under the desk like Pat or in a corner if you can swing it.

All the space below my keyboard is taken by printer, scanner and computer. I'll try it on upper shelf and see what happens, but thanks for quick replies (this forum is very good at that!)
