When MS introduced the latest version of Word, the new .doc file format is not compatible with earlier versions. Docs. created by the new version cannot be opened by the old versions.
Does anyone know if Open Office can manage and use the new format?

Thanks,

Bill

Do you mean open a new .docx Word document in an older version...?  There's a compatibility download you can use to be able to access the new with an older Word version:

I did that as soon as we got Word 2007 at work (I've got the older at home).

What old version are you using? I installed the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack for my Office 2003. It's available free from MS.

EDIT: Dang Ace beat me to this. But my advice is better, so I'd ignore him.

I hadn't tried yet as I haven't had the 2007 that long, but I don't seem to be able to open a word 2007 document in Open Office. Using version 2.4.

I'm still getting the feel for the 2007 version, it has changed a lot from the 2000 version I had before and I just haven't had a lot of extra time to play around with it yet. I do like it though and the Home and Student version I bought is really quite reasonable. Came with word, excel, powerpoint and one note and can be installed on three systems. Got mine for 119$ and I just saw it on newegg for 99$. Of course your not supposed to use it commercially. Yeah, sure.

Thanks, Pat.  That was the answer I needed.  The bigger problem is that it seems Word 2007 is not compatible with our Office server which is running Windows Server 2003. And docx files have become problematic.
