Ran 'game xp' which is supposed to optimize pc performance for games....well, it kinda 'deoptimized' my pc.....all previous system settings have changed and i cannot access system restore to remedy situation. Have tried running system restore from cmd line, no joy. Despite the fact that desktop loads, i cannot access any programmes. When i doubleclick on an icon, nothing happens. This applies to word files also

Just attempted to repair windows installation, problem here is that it's asking for admin password. i never set a password. hitting enter just stops process.

So, kinda at a loss as to what to try next

Any ideas?

update: for some reason i can now access system restore, although it will not restore to an earlier date

i managed to set admin password, computer says no re: system repair

There are several suggested remedies in the FAQ on the Theorica software site.

See http://www.theorica.net/faq.htm

The remedies seem well explained so one of them should be your answer.  Please let us know how you get on.

in the end i did a clean install of xp. managed to save all my data by using http://www.ubcd4win.com/ which is a fantastic utility.

appears that lsass.exe was stopping me doing a system restore. googling lsass.exe suggests that it may have something to do with the sasser virus.

all in all, a valuable learning experience :P
