gainzer, did you have a sound card installed prior to this or did your sound come from an onboard sound chip on the motherboard. What model Q do you have. What is the motherboard model. What operating system are you using ie. windows 98,98se.ME, 2000, or NT. What kind of sound card are you trying to install. Have you uninstalled the prior sound card software. Let us know as much information as possible. We can help but we need more information. Poast back to this same thread for more help. Good luck,

gainzer, your sound card is a Reveal SC400. I should tell you that the Reveal SC400 has some problems with driver instability. For driver upgrades for this card refer to http://www.windrivers.com/company/reveal/rsndmain.htm  If you still want to install the card you need to uninstall all drivers you have installed with the card so far. The onboard audio can be disabled using the BIOS Setup Utility. Select the Advanced menu, then the Peripheral Configuration screen. The menu will offer options to enable or disable the audio if it is present on the motherboard. Then simply follow the directions for correct install. As for the audio cable, yes it needs to be connectged to the sound card for sound to be heard from the speakers. A safer bet would be to install a plug n play sound card from Creative such as the Ensoniq or 16 bit PCI Creative sound card. Both are under $30.00 and can be found at most reputable computer super stores. They can also be bought online at a number of safe and secure sights. To find these sights with the best price use a shopping bot such as www.pricegrabber.com If you need further assistance just poast back using this same thread.  Good luck,

gainzer,

Ideally, when you reply to someone's poast, you want to begin your text before the word [ quote ]. If you place your reply within the words [ quote ] and [ /quote ], then your own reply will show up as a quote.

However, if you prefer, you can simply completely overwrite the person's text whom you are replying to. That is what most of us do, but it is your preference.

i am still looking to solve this sound problem--any help on how to get into bios with out a password for an area i did not set a password for---would be appreciated--please read above post on the problem.--

John

gainzer, in order to clear the password try this. On your mother board at the opposite end from the white PCI slots you will see a round object that looks about the size of a nickle. That is your CMOS battery. Down and slightly to the left you will see a 3 pin jumper named JP20. Normal operation is pins 1&2. To Clear the CMOS you need to move the cover from pins 1&2 to 2&3. Here is the action in which this occors. First power off your system. Then remove the cover taking care to touch the case to discharge any static charge. Then Lay the system on it's side. Locate the CMOS battery then the JP20 jumper. Move the cover from 1&2 to 2&3. Put the plug in the system and turn it on. After a about 20 seconds or less unplug the system. Move the jumper setting back to 1&2 the replace the cover and powre it up. Then enter BIOS and make changes. Warning this will change any settings in BIOS to it's default settings. If this dosen't work poast back. Good luck,

OK here is what is going on --i was able to get into bios--i did disable the audio section under the peripherals-and was able to go back like i was going to install this sound card--but when installing from the disk provided --it once again is stopping at 87% --and nothing else happens-What i am now asking is--should i trash this new card-and continue to pursue the right intergrated sound drivers for this 810 chipset motherboard--or am i missing something in the proper instalation of an audio driver-i have on several occasions --like just now been able to reinstall the VIDEO driver that seems to disappear --with No problem--it has been click and open and install-QUESTION--what do i need to do to make sure that all Previous drivers are gone--what do i need to look for when installing this thing--OR can anyone help me find or get back to the original configuration--my sound was ok before i lost it how do i discover the right audio drivers that came on here---question 2--WOULD reinstalling windows 98 WITHOUT formatting the hard drive--bring back my audio drivers?

--i am at my wits end on what it takes to install these drivers --once again-i need step by step instructions a-z--because obviously i am not doing something right. if i can disable audio in bios set up--i feel i can install these dang drivers--please-help and thanks again in advance....email me at gainzer@excite.com

Gainzer, did the onboard sound work prior to all of this. If not you can go to http://www.pionex.com/drivers/pdriver.asp?category=SOUND The very last driver for sound on the bottom is the one for the onboard sound. If you decide to use the onboard sound card make sure you enable the onboard sound in BIOS. Use the one for win98 not NT. As for the SC400 sound card, it has known installation issues among them are driver instability. In reference to the SC400 Reveal sound card. Are you using a driver from the link I gave you on a previous poast or the one that came with the sound card.

Another thing is the site I gave you for Biostar had diagrams for jumper settings and links for drivers. Here is one for the onboard sound I believe the one for your board is the 810 Aureal,

thnaks for yet more advice--i will give this a try too-but will poast if probs--thanks

gainzer

OK--i have these zip files from 2 sites and the driver cd from the sound card i bought-What is a step by step way of getting these zip files to install like i did for the video driver( which seemed to install itself)--1) unable still to get drivers to install beyond 87% for the sound card 2) the drivers found on those sites are not or i am not able to get them to open properly--i am not clicking th right install icon--if you had those to install the ones listed gor my unit--what would be the steps to get it in my system-(unzip in some particular place--zip in some place--what do i need to do with them)--do i need to be in bios and disable bios sound for these zippp files--or just for the sound card--i know this is not easy without looking at my system--but ----thanks

John

Gainzer, In order to decompress a zip file you will need a Zip program such as PKZIP or WINZP. Both are available for free download at www.cnet.com As for me I use WINZIP. Prior to downloading and unzipping the drivers make a specific place for them to go such as a folder. Try this go to a clear area on your desktop amd put the mouse arrow on that area with no ICONS. Right click the mouse button and you will see a menu go to NEW then up to Folder and click once with the left mouse button this will create a folder named NEW FOLDER. Go to the specific site that has the driver and click the one specific to your sound card. When downloading the file choose to save this file to disk, click ok, then another small window will appear and choose to save the file to NEW FOLDER by double clicking NEW FOLDER. This will move NEW FOLDER up to Save in. Then click save. The download will begin. When the download is complete you will find the new zip file in the NEW FOLDER. Hopefully by this time you have already installed the ZIP file decompressor. Simply double click the zip file in the NEW FOLDER or you can drag and drop to Zip program. Once you have unzipped the Driver you can install. One other thing take a lool at the Reveal SC400 sound card and on the chips you should see REV 3. or REV4 or whatever. Let me know. For reference take a look at this. Those marks will tell what driver will be best and work for the SC400 sound card. Here is where I tell you something else. The company that made the Reveal SC400 is no longer in business.  The sound card was a problem when it was first made and continues to be. Also sometimes software and hardware will not work and there is no reason why other than it is not compatible. Good luck

Gainzer, as for installing onboard sound first you must re-enable onboard sound in the BIOS. Same as disabling only now you will enable. Then use the very first driver listed for your onboard sound. Aureal Vortex A. As for other Sound cards refer to the previous poast concerning Creative Sound cards. It was poast no.4 from the top. Also most Creative sound cards come with speaker out, microphone, midi/joystick device, and playback/recording input device. My advice when it comes to audio devices on proprietary motherboards the simpler the better. Good luck,

Gainzer, to make sure everything from the Reveal SC400 sound drivers is gone do this. Go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, then go to DEVIVE MANAGER. Find the listing for Sound Video and Game controllers. click the plus (+) sign. Remove all references except (Wave device for Modem) if present. Then restart your system. If windows does not recognize the sound chip and install the drivers on it's own then it will ask you for the drivers. Proceed as directed.

no go-the computer wants a disk called WHQL which i do not know what it is--it gives message that pv4010.cat cannot be found-it never seems to find these files--the joystick and other driver seemed to install at startup as told to do before removed and in bios audio was activated-so i get the pv4010.cat --and then it wants the windows 98 cd-and it does not /able to do anything with it-then it says it wants the hardware cd and it seems it can not do anything with that-i follow the obvious paths-no files on these cds seem to be able to load-or br found--what is WHQL--again thanks but i am so confused as to why these simple drivers are so hard to load-do i have the riht hardware diks-is it corrupt stable????-thanks-

John

Gainzer, WHQL is Windows Hardware Quality Labs Microsoft pv4010.cat is a 3byte file associated with Crystal audio driver files. I have no explanation as to what is happening with your computer at this point. My best advice is to take it to a local repair facilty to acomplish the restoration and or install of a new Sound Card. Obviously something more is happening that I can anticipate. The fact that I can not see or be where the computer is stiffles my ability to assist you. Good luck,
