IBM T40 speaker problem

Hello all,

I have an IBM T40 and recently the sound stopped working.  This is not a driver issue, the sound is recognized.  The onboard sound also has a built in speaker, and it still works.  Using a mic plugged into the mic jack works as well.  Plugging headphones into the headphone jack does not get me any sound either.  Also this is not Windows specific, my Linux partition doesn't have sound either, leading me to believe this is a hardware problem.

Any suggestions?

Based on your description of the problem it does appear to be a hardware problem. As such, your only option at this point will be to send it in for repairs.

One other thought...

Is it possible that you unintentionally disabled the sound through the laptop's Fn key? I imagine that it has the ability to mute the sound by using the Fn + one other key. For example, I can mute the sound on my Toshiba by using the Fn + Esc combination. This is completely independent of the operating system.

Or possibly the volume was lowered to where you can't hear it.

It can't hurt to check just to be sure.

I decided to try doing a full shutdown instead of restarting.  Oddly, this fixed the problem.  Thanks for the suggestions, scuzzy.

I'm happy to hear that it was resolved.
