Here is what I have in my computer although it is only 2 years old.

01f0-01f7

03f6-03f6

IRQ 14

I think if it is at all possible I would install Windows 95 on this machine. I had a 486 dx2-66 with only 8 meg of ram and it ran on windows 95. With 32meg it should work OK. Sorry I can't be of more help. Windows 3.1 was a long time ago.

Hello K. Roberts:

Thank you for the reply and I agree with your Win95 suggestion.

Well, after 10 days (day and night) and as many FORUM POSTS . . . I finally read in a book the "one line" that solved this problem.

"SOME HARD DRIVES NEED TO HAVE  (BOTH)  JUMPERS "DS" (MASTER) AND "SP" (SLAVE PRESENT) JUMPERED IN THE HARD DRIVE."

I opened my hard drive casing and did this . . . my CD-ROM drive was detected and the MSCDEX driver was loaded.

Now, I can install the WIN95b operating system using the WIN95b CD.

Best regards,

Hello:  Do different computers have different Base I/O Addresses for the Primary IDE Controller?  I am trying to get a "1997 Hitachi CDR-8330 24 Max CD-ROM Drive" detected as SLAVE on my old "1993 DELL System 466/L" computer.  The Hitachi device driver searches for the CD-ROM at these Base I/O Addresses . . .

(without using the /S: switch in Config.sys)

1F0h IRQ14 Master/Slave

170h IRQ15 Master/Slave

1E8h IRQ12 Master/Slave

168h IRQ10 Master/Slave

(with the /S: switch in Config.sys)

1F0h IRQ14 Master/Slave

170h IRQ10 Master/Slave

1E8h IRQ11 Master/Slave

168h IRQ9  Master/Slave

After each of these Addresses/IRQs it says, "no device or not CD-ROM device."

Then, of course, the MSCDEX driver installation gets aborted.

CONFIG.SYS: (cd-rom driver line)

DEVICEHIGH=C:\HIT-IDE.SYS /D:MSCD0001 /V

AUTOEXEC.BAT: (mscdex line)

LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001 /V /L:D /M:10

This machine does not have a "Secondary" IDE Cable or Motherboard Connection.

It does have a Floppy Drive Cable and Motherboard Connection.

QUESTION:

How can I find out the Base I/O Addresses and IRQs my Hard Disk and CD-ROM drive is using . . . and if they ARE  "different"  from the ones the CD-ROM driver has in it's file - is there some way of OVERRIDING these default addresses and inserting the  "correct"  location for my CD-ROM drive?

If I put any other addresses after the /S: switch - I get a message,

"INVALID /S switch."

FACTS:  The hard drive is jumpered as MASTER, the CD-ROM is jumpered as SLAVE. The drivers are placed as close to the beginning of the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files as I feel they could go . . . "after" Himem.sys, DOS=HIGH,UMB, EMM386, and "after" @ECHO ON."

CD-ROM is connected to (middle) of Primary IDE Cable with Hard Drive at the end.

Primary IDE Cable is connected directly to the Motherboard.

THE MACHINE ITSELF:

1993 Dell System 466/L Computer (S/N: 26RD2)

Dell PA-4151-9DE 146W Power Supply  (S/N: M3008641)

1988 Quantum ProDrive LPS 240MB AT Hard Drive

1992 Dell A06 Motherboard (Speed Jumper = 33MHz)

1994 Cirrus Logic Video Card

Intel 486DX /66DX2 Processor

1988 Phoenix 80486 ROM BIOS PLUS v1.10 A16

1993 Dell Embedded Diagnostics v1.11

Dell Computer Corp. Setup Utility (Hard Disk(s) Settings are:)

( Drive0 = AUTO )

( Drive1 = NOT INSTALLED ) "AUTO" here - causes a "Timeout Autosensing" error)

32MB Extended Memory

MS-DOS 6.22

WINDOWS 3.1

NOTE: CD-ROM drive tests OK on my WIN95b system - so this drive is operable.

Sorry for the length of this POST - wanting to give as much INFO as possible.

THANK YOU for any help, ideas, advice, instructions, or guidance to websites.
