Lemme get this straight--you picked up a Yamaha 20x10x40x CD burner for a grand whopping total of $4.50 + tax?

You could use it for a doorstop and still come out ahead.

I installed the Yamaha today, and it went in nice and easy. I started Win2k, then promptly went to Yamaha.com to download the latest firmware update (1.0d) which resolved some known issues. After installing Nero 5, I promptly created the Windows XP Professional CD from the ISO download. The process was quick and painless.

The CD-R/W is definitely much faster than the old HP 9100 it replaced. It's sleek, blends in beautifully with my Dell, and is pleasantly quiet. The Nero burning software is comprehensive, and easy to use. Much better than Adaptec's EasyCD 4. The only problem is finding media capable of 20x. Even the courtesy CD-R that came with the unit is only rated at 16x.

One nice feature of the Yamaha 2200 is that it rips audio files at 40x. That's fast, folks.

I picked up a Yamaha 2200 (20x10x40x) "Light Speed" burner today from BestBuy. You won't believe what I paid for it, either. The burner just recently came down in price from $249 to $229. Well, BestBuy had an "Open Box Return" special on one for $209, which the manager further marked down by 50%. Naturally, I scarfed it up on the spot.

I opened up the box when I got home to find out that the burner itself was still in the sealed package, although the protective bubble-type wrap for the burner had a broken seal. About the only thing I could find even close to messed up was that the manual was bent slightly because someone didn't repackage it properly. All the software (and the complimentary CD-ROM disc) was still in its original sealed package. Even the warranty card was intact.

Not bad for just $104.50, plus tax. On top of that, I used the $100 BestBuy gift card that I won a couple weeks ago to help pay for it. I'll probably install it in the next couple days, and I'll let you know how it works. Every review I've read so far gives it high marks, so I'll see if it's true.
