AVG 9.07 Alert

I recently upgraded to AVG 9 and during the install, this A/V program added "safe browsing" pluggins to Firefox and IE.  While it seemed not to effect FF, it made IE (ver. 7) almost unusable.  Both pluggins can be disabled in the tools - Options tab in FF or the Tools - Manage Add ons in IE.

I'm using the paid for version and just let the program auto-update. I did notice a real slowdown with firefox at some websites, I disabled the linkscanner in the main program dialogue box. That seems to have fixed it, my subscription is almost up and I won't be buying this again. I'm using the MS free version on my Windows 7 installs and that seems to be enough and will put it on this one soon.

That's why I'm using AVG.  I just don't see a compelling reason to switch to W7.

Yes indeed.   MS Security is now up and running and my first impression is positive.  And, it seems quicker in response than AVG.  Glad I started this.

I have been using MS Security Essentials on all of my systems since it went gold. It is an excellent alternative to just about any paid version.

I happily used it to replace Norton 2009 on my laptop, although I still had 4 months left on my subscription. It also replaced Eset's NOD32 on two of my systems, and I'm using it on my Win 7 RC build. Once I update that system to gold, it too will get Essentials in favor of anything else I can think of.

Essentials overrides Defender.

I don't know if Essentials specifically targets rootkits.

One thing I miss from AVG is a log of scans done.  MSE tells me when the next scan is scheduled but doesn't confirm that yesterday's scan was actually done.  Checking the History tab tells me only that nothing has been found.  Or have I missed something else?

I reset the scan time when I installed to daily at 20:00hrs.  Checking this morning I couldn't find any record that the scan was actually done.  And I don't use sleep mode, at all.

I wasn't watching it at 8.  Although I will now run a full scan manually to get a look at the results window.

Maybe too good......starting late yesterday and again this morning I am getting WinPatrol warnings that WGA, Windows installer and Windows updates are trying to access the web, none of which I started or wanted.   Apparently there is more to MSE and the validation process than meets the eye.

I seem to recall a whole flock of WGA related difficulties not too long ago.

Edit: auto updates was changed from Off to On during the install of MSE.  Just another MS annoyance.
If this continues I'll be going back to AVG quickly.

They may have been benign but I took them as another instance of MS deciding it knows what I want and then acted on that assumption.  Not their machine......

MSE is history, back to AVG 9.

I've been using MSE for some time on my desktop (W7 x64) and one of my laptops (Vista x86)  and think it's perfect.  It does what it says on the tin without any user involvement and without slowing down the host system.  That's just what I want.

A bit late for Bill but if you want to see if previous scans have run then look in the Windows Event Viewer for

Source=Microsoft Antimalware
Event ID=1001 (scan finished)

Apparently, the ability to see previous scans in the History tab of MSE is being considered for a future release.

Maybe just a personal quirk.  I might reconsider in the future, but AVG is a very known commodity that I'm comfortable with.

And the MS saga continues....This morning the update icon is on the task bar - "Welcome to IE 8" which I canceled.  A quick check shows Automatic Updates was enabled, again, after I turned it off yesterday.
I have now disabled auto updates in MS config.
And, it changed the auto-restart option to "enabled", an option I have always turned off.
Dang intrusive, controlling, power happy, machine grabbing MS.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you, Bill.

As for me, I'm quite happy with MS Security Essentials and its performance. Until something better comes along, I plan to keep it for the long haul. I like that it simply works without being a pest. There are no irritating messages, pop-ups, etc. It's like a silent janitor that quietly does his job without interfering in yours.

On Windows Updates... I believe that when you install MS SE it automatically enables it as part of the installation. Once installed, it's simple enough to turn it back off as it's not required for MS SE to function properly. I too would prefer that MS not pull crap like that, but as long as there's a simple fix I can live with it.

EDIT: I think when you consider the cost (free) there is no better security package available. Although it does not have a two-way firewall, I find myself doing just fine using only Windows Firewall and my Linksys router. Besides, there are plenty of free software firewalls available if that's an important feature for you.

Thanks.  I may try it again, now that I know what to expect.

AVG is a new version; we'll see how it holds up.
