A friend wants to build a great video editing system. Here's what I put together for what he needs. The budget is at most $1200, with the likeable sum of around $1000 or even less. So if I run over please tell me where I can scrimp...

I'm going to submit it to that friend for his approval, and meanwhile you guys can tell me what I've missed, and what I can take out. I'm going to ask him about the monitor, and also about the keyboard, mouse and speakers. If we need none of these, that means I can subtract $40 off of the price. If we need all, I'll have to add at least $150, right?

I noticed the mobo didn't have firewire, which I know my friend's camera needs. Is there just an adapter cable from USB2 to FW, or would I have to get an addin card?

An add in card will work fine.

You deffinetely need firewire, I have never seen an adapter to convert Firewire to USB, and if there was you would not want it for video. Ram is always a big thing, the more ram the better in video. Also HD space is a big thing. I would recommend a bigger HD, I have an internal 160 gig HD and an external FW HD on my Dual 2ghz G5, and its amazing how quick space goes when doing a few projects. Honestly though, and I am biased, but if you really looking for a great video system, I would look at a mac. A dual G5, or an older Dual 1ghz G4 are great for this. Plus with the software Final Cut Pro HD or a little cheaper Final Cut Express, will offer you a great package for video. I use Final Cut Pro HD as well as a new program from Apple called Motion for titles and other motion effects over my video. What software do you plan to use on the PC? Adobe Premier?

Sorry, wonderings, not even considering macs. Too expensive. The budget is really a mex of $1100. My friend has Pinnacle Studio 9, and another friend has Premiere, so we're set on that account. I think that a 120GB is fine. 160GB is just a little outta budget. We'll probably expor tthe movies to DVD and be done with the huge video footage, except maybe keep a lores video on the HDD for future refrence...I only think we'll have one anywhere near feature-length movie on the HDD at a time, plus a few shorts, that's all.

well good luck with your system. Adobe Premier is a good video editing app. I used to use it, but now I am hooked on Final Cut Pro HD.  Not to familier with PC processors, what is the speed of the one your looking at? I did see it was 64 bit, which is really good, my old G4 seems so slow now compared to my Dual 2ghz G5

It's an athlon 64 3000+. Not the fastest one on the block, but it should get the job done very well, as I won't be encoding HD or anything, and it'll be backed up with 1 GB of fast RAM and an ATI AIW 9800.

If you want to use MPEG2, then take a look at Hauppauge's PVR250 PCI card.  I believe that it is possible to get it to pass through uncompressed data too.

A good sound card is desired for video editing too - avoid C-Media onboard as it has a few problems with A/V sync.  If you get something like the Audigy 2 ZS you will have a Firewire connector built in, saving a PCI slot.

How much would the ZS cost me, and where could I skimp so that I could get the ZS? And if I did get the hauppauge card, would it and an ATI Radeon 9800 cost less than an AIW?

This is the system I'm using, and I video edit all the time, typically direct from VOB footage. There's an excellent PDF on how I edit DVD video footage.

You can load pretty much any video footage into Virtual Dub and then schedule it to run at night. I built a lot of my video footage on a P3 450Mhz processor, rendering the footage at night while I slept all the time.

ThaG, I don't think he wants to wait that long ::). He's got a vpr matrix 240R, but the FireWire ports don't work on it any more. As I said, he'd probably be doing only one feature-length film at a time (if that many), the majority of his stuff being shorts (maybe 5-10min). He's got Pinnacle 8 I think, but he may borrow Premier from a friend. He'll get Afer effedts if he ever has enough dough (fat chance, but hey)
